Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS)
PLN, as one of the State-Owned Enterprises and the company with the largest assets in Indonesia, has been mandated by the Indonesian government to support national growth by providing reliable electricity to all regions in Indonesia. PLN is tasked with developing a long-term electricity system to meet capacity and energy needs, utilizing new and renewable energy, and improving the efficiency and performance of the electricity system.
In order to develop sustainable business and promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), PLN has formed a team to compile an Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) Document to provide a framework for the company in identifying, assessing, preventing or mitigating, evaluating, and communicating environmental and social risks and impacts (Environmental and Social, E&S) that may arise from the management and operational activities by PLN and its business partners. This ESMS ensures that E&S risks and impacts will be managed in accordance with Good International Industry Practice (GIIP) and aligned with the requirements of International Finance Institutions (IFIs). In line with PLN’s commitment to strengthening environmental sustainability and social sustainability, the ESMS will be applied in internal work and processes to ensure investment and operational activities meet sustainable international requirements.
This ESMS is a “living document” that will continuously be changed/modified/updated from time to time with the approval of the ESMS Team at PLN. The ESMS document consists of the ESMS Manual that was launched in December 2023, and 16 Management Guidelines were launched in May 2024, covering 10 environmental aspects and 6 social aspects as follows:
